Hunger by Michael Grant
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
The Darkness is growing more restless, invading the minds of all who have come into contact with it, bending them to its will. It quickly grows in power after feeding and tries to escape the cave, hoping to fend off the residents of the FAYZ. Later, the inhabitants of the FAYZ rise and try to trap and destroy it before it becomes more dangerous. Michael Grant’s second book in the Gone series does not disappoint. One of my favorite dystopian/supernatural series, I recommend Hunger to anyone looking for a thrilling read.- Catherine H. '17

The second book of Michael Grant's FAYZ series doesn't know what it wants to be. Is it a science fiction novel? The mutant alien and nuclear meltdown suggest that's the case. Or is it a survival novel, as implied by the title? Maybe it's a fantasy story (kids with superpowers tend to show up in those) or a horror story (especially with the flesh-eating worms and possessed five-year-old) or even a romance story (since Grant tends to linger on the developing love triangle). Despite this confusion, Hunger somehow manages to be even harder to put down than its predecessor, Gone, and I agree with Catherine: anyone looking for a thrill should read Hunger immediately--that is, as long as they don't mind picking their way through a tangled mass of genres and plot points.
